Pay estimates
How is yearly pay converted, and why is it labelled an estimate?
You are searching as your Data Scientist profile and comparing Channable's openings in Utrecht with what you earn in pounds. The postings give monthly pay in euros. Portage shows each salary exactly as published, and under it an estimate of the yearly amount in the currency you choose.
Choose your currency
- Open Jobs and select Filters.
- Under Salary currency, choose the currency to estimate in, here GBP. The note under it gives the date of the exchange rates used.
- Optionally enter a Minimum yearly salary in that currency.
- Select Apply filters.

Until you choose, Portage estimates in the salary currency set in your profile's Preferences, or in euros if there is none.
Read the salary column

Salary as published shows the posting's own figures, never converted. The line under it, such as about 50,523 GBP a year, is Portage's estimate. A posting with no salary shows a dash, and its details say Salary Not published.
How the estimate is worked out
For 3600–5000 EUR per month, Portage:
- Takes the top of the range, 5,000 EUR. If the posting gives one figure, it uses that.
- Turns it into a yearly amount: 5,000 × 12 = 60,000 EUR.
- Converts it at the European Central Bank's reference rates, here to about 50,523 GBP.
| Pay period | Counted as a year of |
|---|---|
| Year | 1 |
| Month | 12 months |
| Week | 52 weeks |
| Day | 260 working days |
| Hour | 2,080 working hours |
Portage reads the ECB rates once a day. When it has no rates yet, the note says No exchange rates yet.
Why it is an estimate
- It uses the top of the published range, not what you would be offered.
- A working year of 260 days or 2,080 hours does not match every contract.
- Exchange rates move. The figure uses the rate on the date shown, not the rate on payday.
- It is before tax, and says nothing about cost of living.
No estimate is shown when the posting gives no pay period, or its currency has no ECB rate.
Filter and sort by pay
Minimum yearly salary compares your amount with the estimate. Jobs without an estimate are left out while this filter is on. Selecting the Salary as published column header sorts by the estimate, highest first, with jobs that have none at the end.
Visa checks never use this estimate. A salary published in another currency stays Unknown in an eligibility check.
